NEW DELHI – The government late Wednesday reduced the basic import duty on crude and refined edible oils such as palm oil, soyoil, and sunflower oil to keep cooking oil prices in check ahead of the festival season.

The import duty on crude soyoil and crude palm oil has been cut to 5% from 10% while the 10% import duty on crude sunflower oil has been scrapped entirely, according to a gazette notification. The revised rates take effect Thursday.

For processed edible oils, the import duty on refined soyoil and refined palm oil has been cut to 27.5% from 32.5?rlier. The import duty on refined sunflower oil has been reduced slightly more to 22.5% from 32.5%.

India relies on imports to meet more than 60% of its domestic cooking oil requirements. The country mainly imports palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia, soyoil from Brazil and Argentina, and sunflower oil from Russia and Ukraine.  End
