NEW DELHI – Under the influence of a deep depression and its associated trough, extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Chhattisgarh and Odisha till Thursday, and parts of Telangana Thursday and Friday, the India Meteorological Department said. The weather department has issued a red alert for the same. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal moved westwards over Andhra Pradesh and Odisha in the early hours of Wednesday. The weather system is likely to move further westwards by the latter hours of Wednesday, the weather department said. The movement of this system, along with a trough running from the centre of this deep depression up to the Gulf of Thailand, is likely to bring heavy rains to the regions adjoining the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

Vidarbha may get very heavy rainfall Thursday and Friday, after which it may receive heavy rains Saturday. Chhattisgarh and east Madhya Pradesh may receive very heavy rainfall Friday and Saturday and heavy rainfall Thursday and Sunday, the weather bureau said. West Madhya Pradesh may receive heavy showers Friday and Saturday. Chhattisgarh may see thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50-60 kilometres per hour and gusting up to 70 km per hour till Thursday.

Heavy rainfall is expected over parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Kerala till Friday, while parts of Karnataka may receive heavy rainfall Thursday. Telangana may receive very heavy rainfall till Friday followed by heavy rainfall Saturday. Thundersqualls are likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana till Thursday.

Very heavy rainfall is also expected over east Uttar Pradesh Friday and Saturday, and over Uttarakhand over the weekend. This is most likely due to an upper air cyclonic circulation over northwest Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring areas. Heavy rainfall is expected over east Uttar Pradesh Thursday and Sunday, and west Uttar Pradesh from Friday to Sunday. Uttarakhand may see heavy showers Monday.

In east India, very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand Thursday and Friday, after which the region may receive heavy rains Friday and Saturday. Odisha may also receive very heavy rains Friday and Saturday and thundersqualls till Thursday. In the northeast, very heavy rainfall is expected over Assam and Meghalaya till Monday, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura may receive heavy rains Sunday and Monday.

The southwest monsoon has further withdrawn from Delhi entirely, the weather bureau said. It has also retreated from most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and some parts of Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat Wednesday, the bureau said.  End
