--Govt: PSU banks to stay open Sunday in view of proposed 3-day staff strike

NEW DELHI – The government has instructed public sector banks to stay open Sunday in view of the proposed three-day strike from Sept. 28-30. "In order to ensure that the genuine banking needs of the public are not adversely affected for an extended period, all public sector banks and regional rural banks will function normally on Sunday, the Sept. 27, 2026," a finance ministry release said.

The Reserve Bank of India has granted approval for all bank branches, offices, automated teller machine-link branches and currency chests to remain fully operational on Sunday, it said. "The government and bank managements have appealed to unions to defer the proposed strike, and have also taken measures to ensure that essential banking services continue un-interrupted," the release said.

The proposed strike coincides with the half-yearly closing of banks on Sept. 30, which is crucial for reconciliation, provisioning, and treasury and market operations. The United Forum of Bank Unions and other unions in public sector banks, supported by regional rural banks, have called for these strikes in support of implementation of five-day banking.  End
