MUMBAI – The depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a deep depression in the late hours of Tuesday. There is a "medium" probability that this deep depression could intensify further into a tropical storm in the next 24 hours, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. The strengthening of the weather system could occur when it is crossing the coastal line between Kalingapatnam and Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh, the weather agency said.
The deep depression has a partially exposed low-level circulation centre with fairly organised cloud bands. Environmental analysis places this system in an area suitable for further development, with favourable wind speeds and sea surface temperatures, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, the weather agency said.
The weather system's cloud bands have already encroached upon the coastline, and caused an increase in the intensity and spread of rainfall over parts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. The deep depression is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a tropical storm. Strong and gusty winds of around 60–80 kilometres per hour are likely over the coasts of Andhra Pradesh when the weather system moves and strengthens, the weather agency said.
Once the weather system moves inland, it will persist over the parts of east and central India for four to five days, though it is likely to weaken, the agency said. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, east Uttar Pradesh, and east Madhya Pradesh during this period. The peripherals of dense clouds will reach parts of Vidarbha and north interior Karnataka as well, it said.
The intensity of rainfall over most of these regions is likely to weaken from Monday onwards, the weather agency said. By then, these conditions will largely vacate the central parts and shift towards Bihar, Jharkhand, and east Uttar Pradesh, the agency said. End
