MUMBAI – Indices are expected to move sideways to positive as crude oil prices continued to ease and fell below the psychological mark of $100 per barrel. At the same time, the uncertainty around the US-Iran war ending remained after US President Donald Trump's speech at the United Nations General Assembly. Easing crude oil prices are likely to translate into good earnings visibility for Indian companies, according to analysts.

At 0725 IST, the November futures of Brent crude were at $99.22 per barrel. As per a Bloomberg report, Saudi Arabia said it could resume operations at its east-west oil pipeline this week, which further eased oil supply concerns. Supply through the key oil pipeline was disrupted last week by attacks carried out by an Iran-backed group in Iraq, according to reports.

US President Donald Trump said at the United Nations General Assembly he was considering whether to "annihilate" Iran and drive it "into hell". If Tehran decides to make a deal, then the US would allow the nation to rebuild. "But that won't happen until after the midterm elections in November, NBC News quoted Trump as saying.

Foreign portfolio investors were net sellers of Indian equities Wednesday. They sold shares worth INR 38.10 billion and were net sellers for the second consecutive session. Analysts are of the view that India will become a favourite destination for overseas investors once it showcases a special aspect that gives good returns. "They are not finding something new with respect to the Indian markets are concerned at this point of time," said a head of research with a domestic broking firm. That is one of the reasons why foreign investors are trying to sideline Indian markets in the medium to short term, the analyst said.

At 0746 IST, the September futures of GIFT Nifty contracts were 0.1% higher at 23339, indicating a muted start for the Nifty 50. The Nifty 50 chart structure remains weak as long as the index trades below 23600 levels on a closing basis. The support for the 50-stock is placed at 23100-23000, according to Vipin Kumar, senior technical and derivatives analyst at Globe Capital Market. "Hence, we suggest that traders maintain a "sell-on-rise" trading approach as long as the index trades below 23,600 on a closing basis and suggest adopting a stock-specific trading approach," Kumar said. Globally, most Asian markets opened lower Wednesday and Wall Street indices ended mixed Tuesday.  End
