MUMBAI – The benchmark indices ended higher Monday with the Nifty 50 rising for the fourth session. The market remained resilient through the day as the price of crude oil cooled further, though it continued to be above the $100 per-barrel mark. Heavyweight stocks and pharmaceutical companies helped the market to end the session on a positive note. The 50-stock index ended above 23400 points after five sessions.
The Nifty 50 ended 0.3% higher at 23414.30 points. The BSE Sensex ended 0.8% higher at 74858.99 points. Heavyweights HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, and ICICI Bank ended 1-2% higher, keeping the Nifty 50 up. Shares of Eternal ended nearly 3% higher, contributing to the rise in the index. "Improving sentiment ahead of the upcoming US-China talks, renewed hopes of diplomatic engagement between the US and Iran at the UN, and the decline in oil prices and bond yields have provided relief to investors," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note.
Pharmaceutical companies were the major gainers Monday. Both the Nifty Pharma and Nifty Healthcare closed over 1% higher. Analysts had recently said the sector had been seeing defensive buying amid volatility in the equity market for macroeconomic concerns. However, Monday's rise in pharmaceutical stocks cannot be attributed only to defensive buying, Maitri Sheth, equity research analyst at Choice Institutional Equities, said. The launch pipeline of pharmaceutical players provides optimism for further growth, according to Sheth. Shares of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories ended nearly 2% and over 1% higher, respectively. Shares of Mankind Pharma, Wockhardt, Laurus Labs, and Piramal Pharma ended 3-6% higher.
On the other hand, telecommunications major Bharti Airtel fell over 3% and was the worst hit stock in the Nifty 50. The stock was the major drag on the Nifty 50 index. Information technology majors Infosys and Wipro ended around 1% lower. Adani Group constituents in the Nifty 50--Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone and Adani Enterprises--ended 2% and over 1% lower, respectively.
The broader market indices ended in the red. The small-cap indices ended 0.1% lower while the mid-cap indices were flat to 0.4% lower. Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Metal ended 0.6% lower after having risen for three consecutive sessions, during which it gained 3%.
On the stocks front, Oracle Financial Services Software ended over 8% lower as the worst-hit stock in the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices. The shares fell after the company's parent Oracle Corp.'s loans of $18 billion linked to a data centre in New Mexico came under pressure. Syndicate banks, including Santander and Jefferies, quoted the loans at 89-91 cents on the dollar, Financial Times reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Shares of the Indian subsidiary touched a near two-month low of INR 10,900.
Shares of Patanjali Foods ended nearly 8% higher to be the best performing stock in the Nifty 200. The fast-moving consumer goods company is expected to report better performance in edible oil sales in the financial year 2026-27 (Apr-Mar), Chief Executive Officer Sanjeev Asthana said in an interview with CNBC-TV18. Tega Industries ended nearly 10% higher after its subsidiary received an order worth INR 12.6 billion from Kalpataru Projects International.
