NEW DELHI – India's GDP needs to grow around 9% on year to become a $30 trillion economy by 2047, Statistics Ministry Secretary Saurabh Garg said Monday. The country has been growing around 7–8% over the past few years, he said.
"If we need to reach $30 trillion (economy), we need to grow at 8–9(%), around 9%. It is not something which is unachievable," Garg said at All India Management Association's 53rd National Management Convention here. "We have to come closer to 9% over the next 20 years," he added.
"We are currently at around $2,900-$3,000 per capita, and we are talking about an $18,000 per capita by 2047," Garg said. India had reported a quicker-than-expected GDP growth at 7.8% in the June quarter. GDP expanded 7.7% in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), the government data showed.
India has undergone digital transformation in recent years with the launch of citizen-friendly applications and solutions such as DigiLocker and DigiYatra. Even as the country has good digital public infrastructure now, Garg said, there is a lack of data harmonisation infrastructure. To address the issue, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation is currently working with other ministries and departments to harmonise economic data, which will help the data to be systematically discovered, understood, connected, and utilised, he said.
Further, the secretary also pitched to convert the available statistical data as an "asset" as it can help in India's economic growth. "We need to fire on all our cylinders to ensure that the growth that we are talking of, we reach that," Garg said.
The ministry, along with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has started to look into ways to measure the digital economy. "I suppose that is just the first step before we can look at data as an asset," Garg said, adding that the data from the private sector can also be harmonised thereafter.
The statistics ministry is also working on improving data sharing and governance. In this regard, "A model data sharing framework has been developed in which data can be classified into what is shareable and what is non-shareable," Garg said. Work is underway on having an appropriate framework for data sharing and governance, he added. End
