NEW DELHI – India's foreign exchange reserves fell by $4.92 billion to $780.78 billion from an all-time high of $785.71 billion a week ago, data released by the central bank on Friday showed. Foreign currency assets, too, followed the same trajectory, falling $2.37 billion on week to $645.80 billion.
Till last Friday, the foreign exchange reserves rose for 10 consecutive weeks. Last week's high was on the back of a sharp rise in capital inflows under the Reserve Bank of India's swap schemes. The central bank's swap schemes announced in June helped shore up foreign reserves. The schemes attracted total foreign exchange inflows of $136.38 billion as of Aug. 31, the central bank had said.
The value of the central bank's gold holdings declined by $2.59 billion on week to $111.23 billion as of Sept. 11. The Reserve Bank of India is likely to have conducted dollar-rupee sell-buy swaps in the foreign exchange market in order to drain surplus rupee liquidity from the banking system in the week ended Sept. 11. The rupee fell 0.3% against the dollar during the week.
Calculated in dollar terms, the RBI's foreign exchange reserves also reflect the impact of the appreciation or depreciation of currencies other than the dollar, such as the euro, the pound sterling, and the yen, held by the central bank. End
