NEW DELHI – Much like the first edition of the India Semiconductor Mission, the second edition is likely to be completed before the stipulated six-year timeframe, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at a fireside chat at SEMICON India 2026 on Friday. "... given the progress and given the interest that we have seen so far, given the feedback that we are receiving from the VC (venture capitalist) community, we should be seeing at least 200 chip design companies developing in our country through the Semicon 2.0 initiative," he said.

 

According to Vaishnaw, one focus area of Semicon 2.0, which aims to train 100,000 technicians through partnerships with industry and institutes, will be upgrading the course curriculum. "... very soon we will start the first precision manufacturing institute. Then we will have multiple such institutes. All that will feed into the MSME (micro, small, and medium enterprises) sector," he said. 

 

Vaishnaw highlighted that several international semiconductor companies have ventured beyond their home countries to set up shop in India because of the trust India has earned in protecting intellectual property. "That itself is a huge mark, a huge point why we will continue to succeed despite maybe there might be some attempts at stopping us. But I think the growth will be consistent and confident," he added.

 

Further, while India has embarked on a well-planned roadmap to develop the semiconductor industry domestically, Vaishnaw sees both internal and external challenges ahead. However, he believes the key is to be cognisant of the challenges, have the ability to address them, and continue working consistently.   End
