NEW DELHI – Indian pharmaceutical industry needs parallel execution of regulatory processes rather than serially, Manoj Joshi, secretary of the department of pharmaceuticals, said at the eighth CII Pharma & Life Sciences Summit here Friday. Currently, there is a lot of "distrust" between researchers and industry players. "We need to reduce that," Joshi said, as the industry requires a few sets of reforms to move ahead.

The secretary suggested that sector-specific regulators, researchers, and industry should focus on working together to streamline the regulatory process. He also urged the industry to increase spending on research and development.

The regulators have been receiving a lot of pressure for reforms. In its wake, the secretary said that he was "quite hopeful that in the next one or two months, we would be making a lot of changes in our regulatory system". Joshi said India should make its regulatory system an advantage rather than a disadvantage and hoped that within a year, the country would also be cited as a place where the industry is able to move faster due to a swift regulatory system.

Pharmaceutical startups are taking more risk in terms of putting up manufacturing plants, contract development and manufacturing organisations, as well as investing more in research, Joshi said. However, it is otherwise for venture capitalists and other large companies as they are refraining from taking risks. "I see a lot of risk taken by a lot of startups. I do not see a lot of risk taken by a large number of pharma companies. I do not see a risk taken by a lot of venture funds or investment arms. I think that some part of the industry is really taking much of the risk and playing safer and safer," Joshi said.  End
