NEW DELHI – The government has received investment commitments worth INR 1 trillion so far under the second edition of the India Semiconductor Mission, Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said Thursday. "... Applied Materials today announced a $5 billion investment... and many others... they are all looking at setting up their bases in India," the minister said at a media briefing on the sidelines of SEMICON India 2026, adding that the commitments are towards semiconductor design as well as manufacturing.
Earlier in the day, US-based semiconductor equipment maker Applied Materials, Inc. announced a $5 billion investment in India over the next decade to expand its presence in the country, focusing on research, strengthening the supply chain, and developing the workforce. Semiconductor manufacturing equipment supplier Lam Research plans to invest INR 100 billion to set up its first silicon component manufacturing facility in the country.
Overall, day one of the three-day event saw the signing of 16 memorandums of understanding, most of them by Tata Electronics Ltd.
Responding to a question from Informist on export competitiveness of semiconductor chips manufactured in India, Vaishnaw said: "All of them are competing very well in the world. So far, whatever production is there is already booked. The capacity which is getting created is already booked and the capacity is getting created at a really, really rapid pace."
Of the 12 projects approved under India Semiconductor Mission 1.0, five have begun commercial production, including Suchi Semicon Pvt. Ltd. and CDIL Semiconductors earlier in the day.
While the first edition of the programme focused on laying the foundation, the second is about building the ecosystem, Vaishnaw said. "The approach in SEMICON 2.0 will be to promote the design companies in a very big way, both the startups as well as the large companies." Overall, the Semicon 2.0 scheme spans six pillars and 10 categories with an outlay of INR 1.275 trillion. End
