MUMBAI - It is easier to analyse infrastructure investment trusts if they and their sponsors are willing to share information, according to Prasun Gajri, chief investment officer and chief strategy officer, HDFC Life Insurance Co. Ltd.
Gajri was responding to a question from Informist on the sidelines of an infrastructure conclave whether insurance companies, as significant investors in InvITs and real estate investment trusts, were overlooking risks arising from the complex nature of these instruments. InvITs and real estate investment trusts are neither pure equity nor pure debt.
"There is going to be risks in any investment, but the question is what returns you are getting, and at the pool level what risks you are willing to take," Gajri said. The risks vary from InvIT to InvIT, and not every InvIT is going to be the same, he said. As an investor, an insurance company will make its decision based on its own risk assessment, he said. Asked whether disclosures by InvITs are adequate, given the leeway available to them under the Securities and Exchange Board of India's norms, Gajri said if the disclosures were not adequate, "then you may not want to invest."
HDFC Life's assets under management were INR 4.88 trillion, with about 73% in debt and the rest in equities, as per the company's investor presentation following its June quarter earnings. On Thursday, HDFC Life shares ended at INR 557 on the National Stock Exchange, up 5.1% from Wednesday's close. End
