NEW DELHI – In fresh tariff worries for India, the US House of Representatives late Wednesday passed a bill which looks to impose duties of up to 100% on countries buying crude oil and natural gas from Russia. The bill will now go for US President Donald Trump's approval.

"The Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026", passed by the Senate last month, cleared the House in a 262-159 vote. The legislation calls for an additional 100% tariff on the top five importers of Russian crude oil or natural gas, or facilitate evasion of economic sanctions imposed by Washington.

India, besides China, is among the top five buyers of Russian energy and would be at risk of fresh US tariffs if Trump chooses to exercise the authority. The bill is intended to penalise Moscow over its continued full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Last month, Senators voted overwhelmingly in favour of the bill and passed it by a vote of 86-11.

With a 100% tariff, the bill directly impacts India, China, and three other countries over their purchases of Russian oil and gas. Since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, India has emerged as one of the world's largest buyers of discounted Russian crude oil and Russia now accounts for a substantial share of India's imports.  End
