NEW DELHI – The government has reduced the base import price of gold while keeping it unchanged for silver, according to a notification from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs Tuesday. The base import price of gold was lowered by $95 per 10 grams to $1,373 per 10 grams. For silver, it was retained at $2,028 per kg. The revised rates came into effect Wednesday.

The customs department had previously revised the base import price for both precious metals on Aug. 31. Typically, the government revises base import prices of gold and silver every fortnight. It makes more frequent changes when prices are volatile. India is one of the world's largest importers of silver and the second-largest consumer of gold.  End
