NEW DELHI – The commerce ministry's Directorate General of Foreign Trade has approved applications from seven companies to import 642 cars from the UK for the rest of this calendar year under the tariff rate quota provisions of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement, a commerce ministry official said Wednesday. One company has been asked to rectify deficiencies in its application, the official added. 

This comes after the DGFT in July invited applications for importing passenger vehicles and certain goods transport vehicles from the UK under the tariff rate quota mechnism under the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. The government had sought applications for a quota for about 5,000 units. 

"We have received eight applications. 642 cars were allotted," the official said. "Eight companies in total applied for it, and seven companies were allotted. One company did not submit the required paper, so a rectification letter is issued."

The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, which provides for concessional customs duty on vehicle imports from the UK subject to particular quotas, came into effect on Jul. 15. In FY26, India and the UK's total trade was at $25.13 billion, up 9%. India exported goods worth $13.44 billion and imported goods worth $11.68 billion.  End
