NEW DELHI – India's current account deficit widened to $7.0 billion in July from $3.2 billion a year ago, driven by a wider merchandise trade deficit, data released by the Reserve Bank of India on Monday showed. The current account was in a deficit of $6.2 billion in June. For Apr-Jul, the current account deficit stood at $11.2 billion, nearly double the $6.6 billion recorded in the same period last year.

India's net merchandise trade deficit widened to $31.7 billion in July from $28.2 billion a year ago. Meanwhile, the net services trade surplus increased to $17.6 billion in the reporting month from $16.4 billion a year ago, while net transfers rose marginally to $13.2 billion from $12.6 billion.

India's overall balance of payments recorded a surplus of $20.8 billion in July, compared with a surplus of $300 million a year ago. For Apr-Jul, overall balance of payments recorded a surplus of $12.7 billion, signinificantly higher from $4.8 billion in the same period a year ago.

The improvement in the balance of payments was driven by measures announced by the Reserve Bank of India and the government in June to spur foreign inflows. In June, the central bank announced a host of steps to attract foreign capital, including concessional foreign exchange swap facilities for foreign currency non-resident deposits and borrowings by public sector entities. Net foreign direct investment inflows were $7.3 billion in July, up over 62% from a year ago. In June, it was at $1.3 billion.

The RBI's measures to boost foreign capital inflows have attracted $136.38 billion from Jun. 8 till Monday, the central bank said Wednesday. Banks mobilised $127.23 billion through FCNR(B) deposits between Jun. 8 and Aug. 31, much higher than initial expectations. The robust response to the special scheme led the RBI in mid-August to advance the closure of the special scheme on Aug. 31 rather than Sept. 30 as originally announced.

Services trade surplus in Apr-July rose to $69.3 billion from $64.3 billion a year ago. Net transfers during the period rose to $53.9 billion from $43.4 billion a year ago. The capital account recorded a surplus of $23.9 billion in Apr-Jul, compared with a surplus of $11.4 billion a year ago.  End
