MUMBAI – Benchmark indices ended lower Tuesday as global cues presented no space for domestic markets to breathe. Higher crude oil prices, US bond yield above 5%, heightened expectations of an interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve, and a rise in India's retail inflation dampened investor sentiment. Bearish sentiments took over soon after the indices opened higher. ICICI Bank and Reliance Industries, along with financial services shares, were the major laggards in the benchmark indices. However, information technology showcased resilience and ended higher.
The Nifty 50 ended at 23118.60 Tuesday, 1.2% lower than Friday. The BSE Sensex fell 1% to end at 74003.82. Markets were shut Monday for Ganesh Chaturthi. The 50-stock index ended at an over five-month low.
The key reason for the decline on Dalal Street was high crude oil prices. The November futures of Brent were up 2% at near $108 per barrel, over 48% higher than levels before the US-Iran war started. Further pressing domestic equities was the yield on the benchmark US 10-year government bond that rose more than six basis points to 5.025%. The ongoing war in West Asia continued to weigh down global equities.
Despite a weak trading day, IT stocks held on to their gains firmly intraday and ended higher. HCL Technologies, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, Tech Mahindra, and Wipro ended 2–4% higher. Nifty IT ended over 2% higher. Indian technology shares received a boost after a major sell-off in artificial intelligence stocks globally following caution from industry chieftains. Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei has called for slowing down development of advanced AI systems, citing risks. "We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models," Amodei wrote in an online essay. Others, including OpenAI's Sam Altman and billionaire tech tycoon Elon Musk, also echoed risks posed by the rapid development of AI. Moreover, social media has been flooded with debates regarding the safety of agentic AI models.
While Indian IT rose, Nifty 50 heavyweights Reliance Industries and ICICI Bank ended around 2% lower each. Financial services companies Shriram Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, HDFC Life Insurance Co., Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and SBI Life Insurance Co. ended 2-5% lower. However, in contrast to its financial services peers, HDFC Bank remained green throughout the day and ended over 1% higher.
The bank Saturday said it has submitted two names to the Reserve Bank of India for the post of managing director and chief executive officer, nearly two weeks after its current MD and CEO, Sashidhar Jagdishan, said he will not seek reappointment once his tenure ends. The shortlisting of two candidates has eased some concerns over leadership at India's top private sector bank that had weighed on the stock earlier. "This development is seen as a step closer to end ambiguity on leadership transition," ICICI Securities said in a note. While the decision of the central bank is awaited, the shortlisted candidates are expected to have institutional experience of running large financial service franchises.
Among individual stocks, Bharat Electronics ended over 5% lower to be the worst hit stock in the Nifty 50. The stock ended lower for the fourth consecutive session and shed nearly 7% during the period. InterGlobe Aviation and Asian Paints ended nearly 4% and 3% lower, respectively, due to high crude oil prices that are likely to impact the margins of the airline operator and the paint maker. Asian Paints uses crude oil as a major raw material to make paints, while higher jet fuel costs are likely to hit IndiGo. Adani Enterprises, Grasim Industries, Titan Co., Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, JSW Steel, UltraTech Cement, Trent, Eternal, and Mahindra & Mahindra were the other major stocks that fell, down 2–4%.
Broader market indices bled as well. Small-cap and mid-cap indices ended around 2% lower each. Among the sectoral indices, Nifty IT is the only constituent that ended in green. "IT stocks outperformed as comments suggesting slower AI development eased concerns over the rapid disruption of traditional IT services," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note. Nifty Realty ended 4% lower and Nifty India Defence closed nearly 6% lower.
On the stock front, shares of defence company Solar Industries India ended nearly 14% lower to be the top loser in both the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices. The stock fell after its wholly-owned step-down subsidiary, Solar SA Investments Proprietary, signed an agreement to acquire South Africa-based Omnia Holdings in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $1.36 billion. In a conference call after inking the pact, the company said its debt is expected to mount to around INR 100 billion to INR 110 billion. This is sharply higher than its total debt of INR 14.68 billion in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar).
All Tata group companies ended with gains after the RBI rejected holding company Tata Sons' plea to remain an investment company without going public. The company is now bound to be listed. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Tata Investment Corp., and Tata Communications ended 1-10% higher. Shares of Tata Chemicals hit the 20% upper circuit at INR 734.90.
The current global scenario is expected to adversely impact the Indian equity markets. With crude oil prices above $100 per barrel and US bond yields over 5%, global market participants expect the US Federal Reserve to raise interest rates. The US CPI-based inflation was 0.4% on month in August against 0.1% in July. Nearly 95% of market partcipants now expect the Fed to hike rates to 3.75–4.00%, as per the CME FedWatch tool. Back in India, retail inflation rose to a 20-month high of 4.82%, primarily due to higher food inflation.
If there is a sharp correction after a probable Fed interest rate hike, there is a risk that the Nifty 50 could fall below 20000 in the next one or two months, according to Santosh Meena, head of research at Swastika Investmart. "But that will be a great buying opportunity because we haven't performed (well) for the last two years," the analyst said. After such a sharp fall, the market is likely to see reasonable valuations and some buying interest, he added. However, domestic markets are expected to see a moderate fall as compared to their global peers, due to their recent underperformance. Over the last one month, the Nifty 50 has shed nearly 4%.
