MUMBAI – Wholesale sales of automobiles in August grew at a healthy pace, continuing the trend from previous months, as the despatches benefited from good demand ahead of the festival season and from a low base, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed Tuesday. While the year-on-year growth rate remained strong, the month-on-month growth remained in low single digit. 

 

Companies sold 3.18 million automobiles to dealerships in August, up almost 16% on year and just over 3% on month. This includes domestic sales of 2.50 million units, up 14% on year and almost 4% on month. Shipments overseas surged 22% on year but remained largely flat on month at 681,338 units. Overall vehicle output maintained pace with the demand as companies manufactured 3.16 million automobiles in August, up 17% on year. 

 

Overall, almost all segments' domestic sales grew rapidly but sales of passenger vehicles stood out, driven by strong demand for passenger cars and utility vehicles.

 

Despatches of two-wheelers in India grew almost 11% on year to 2.03 million units. The growth in this segment's wholesale sales would've been higher, but for the very low growth in despatches of motorcycles, which form just over half of all the two-wheelers sold in India.

 

Exports of two-wheelers grew faster than domestic sales, as companies sold 555,292 units overseas, up nearly 29% on year. Output of two-wheelers grew 15% on year to 2.56 million units, led by sharply higher production of scooters. 

 

The wholesale sales of passenger vehicles in India grew 33% on year to 374,056 units while their exports tumbled 17% to 68,230 units. Despatches of utility vehicles remained strong in India and overseas. However, passenger cars shone in India even as they remained the primary reason behind the sharp contraction in exports. Car manufacturers retained their focus on utility vehicles as they made 454,266 cars in August, up 26% on year.

 

The domestic despatches of three-wheelers grew 23% on year to 93,764 units while their exports grew 31% to 56,166 units. Demand for passenger carriers, which accounts for a significant bulk of three-wheelers sold in India, remained strong in India and overseas. Compannies manufactured 146,404 three-wheelers in August, up 22% on year. 

 

APR-AUG

Wholesale sales of automobiles so far this financial year have sharply benefited from a low-base. Companies sold 12.07 million automobiles locally in Apr-Aug, up 21% on year. Their exports fared even better, as companies sold 3.29 million units overseas, up 30% on year. Production of automobiles in these months grew roughly 22% on year to 15.63 million units.

 

The domestic despatches of two-wheelers in Apr-Aug grew 19% on year to 9.62 million units while their exports surged 33% to 2.66 million units. Three-wheelers exhibited a similar trend: their domestic sales grew 29% on year to 403,717 units but their exports grew at a stronger rate of nearly 46% to 259,593 units.

 

Passenger vehicles' domestic sales increased 28% on year to 2.04 million units but their exports barely grew 2% to 360,553 units. Exports remained a disappointment primarily because of passenger cars, even as utility vehicles grew strongly.
