NEW DELHI – The BRICS nations engage at various levels to build consensus on important matters of global importance like the various ongoing wars around the world, India's Sherpa for BRICS Sudhakar Dalela said Saturday. "We try to work and forge consensus on important matters of global importance, obviously, these consultations require conversations at various levels. At Sherpa levels, which I steer, the foreign ministers and the leaders. So I would say that throughout the year, we have been engaged with our BRICS members at various levels," he said at a press conference after the BRICS nations adopted the New Delhi Declaration.

"Engagement at various levels has enabled us to forge consensus on this particular matter in terms of reflecting the views of BRICS countries in the New Delhi Declaration," he said referring to war in West Asia war. The BRICS members expressed deep concern over the continued escalation of tensions in West Asia and called for exercising maximum restraint, as well as avoiding actions that could further aggravate the situation.

The war in West Asia broke out on Feb. 28 after the US and Israel jointly attacked Iran and since then, has severely hurt global energy supplies and economic stability. On energy supply concerns due to the West Asia war Dalela said that the BRICS nations discussed the economic consequences of geopolitical challenges throughout the year. The New Delhi declaration is significant as there were major differences between Iran and the UAE as they are on opposite sides of the conflict.

Dalela said the members of BRICS unequivocally condemned terrorism in any form. "The New Delhi Declaration, has very, very clear articulation of BRICS members on this matter of fight against terrorism. There is also a strong outcome, a consensus on the financing of terrorism," he said.

New Delhi Declaration also reaffirms BRICS' commitment to reform global institutions and for a more representative and inclusive multilateral system. "BRICS has spoken very clearly about the reform of UN Security Council and the candidature of India and other BRICS members in that area," Dalela said. "There was a broad convergence on the need to strengthen multilateralism and to make our global governance institutions more representative, inclusive, effective and responsive to today's realities," he added.

During his intervention at the BRICS Summit, Primer Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the need for BRICS to remain focused on practical cooperation and development oriented outcome. "Prime Minister underlined the importance of strengthening the voice of the global south and reforming global governance to make it more representative, inclusive and responsive to contemporary realities," Dalela told reporters.

He added that during its presidency, India's endeavour has been to make BRICS cooperation more practical, overlooking and responsive to its people. The member nations are fully committed to the outcome of Summit, Dalela said.

In order to mark two decades of BRICS, a postal stamp was also released by the BRICS leaders. The BRICS group comprises 11 countries--Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. Dalela said BRICS nations will continue to collaborate with China, other nations on innovation.  End
