--SBI official: Using AI tools internally to assess credit needs of corporates

--CONTEXT: SBI chief general manager speaking at Global Fintech Fest 2026

MUMBAI – State Bank of India will use more artificial intelligence tools to anticipate the needs of customers, said Dinesh Kumar Purohit, the bank's chief general manager. The bank has already started using AI tools to assess credit requirements of new and large corporates, Purohit said at a panel discussion at the Global Fintech Festival 2026 Friday.

At the session, the panelists agreed that the real opportunity of using AI is orientating and making a more personalised experience for the client. AI should also be used in making the onboarding process easier for a client, experts on the panel said.

Indraneel Ajitkumar Pandit, chief digital officer at Federal Bank, said onboarding is a human process and a "human problem", and would need complex technology. "One question is how much conversation do we introduce in our interfaces? Can we use agents to actually solve human problems?"

Talking about onboarding using AI, Amber Henderson-Smart, global head of client connectivity at HSBC, said the next big milestone is about rethinking the way to interact with clients. "For us, we're thinking about agents being similar to a human in terms of entitlements it has, but we need to be able to authenticate like a system because there's not going to be a person on the other end to do two-factor authentication," she said.  End
