MUMBAI – There is an opportunity for Indian exchanges to seek better integration in the global market and efforts can be made to take the uniqueness of Indian markets to a larger global audience, Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd.'s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Anjali Rai said at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 Wednesday. Speaking about India's current market benchmarks, Rai said the country has a good, strong foundation on which work can be done by the way of product integration to meet what the global market is looking for.
"Since from one lens it appears that India suddenly wants to become more assertive, we want to have a price (discovery) in India," Rai said. The world expects India to have a stronger influence because it is a large market, a large producer, and a large consumer. "For that we do need to have a stronger benchmark," she said.
The panel also featured Ashishkumar Chauhan, the managing director and chief executive officer of IPO-bound National Stock Exchange, Latika Kundu, the managing director and chief executive officer of Metropolitan Stock Exchange, and Sundararaman Ramamurthy, the managing director of BSE Ltd.
Amid a rapid influx of usage of artificial intelligence in the market, Chauhan said stock exchanges and news media will have a key role to play in dissecting "sea of untruth" coming out in "droves" at the moment. "This is where the trusted media will have more of a role to play. The exchanges or platforms which are trusted will have to be much more nuanced and much more correct," he said.
Chauhan said cases of manipulation in social media using technology may happen more frequently but regulators such as the Securities and Exchange Board of India will have to use the powers at their disposal. "That's where we will have to create tools at our levels and the regulatory levels to understand that what is correct, what is not correct," he said.
BSE chief Ramamurthy said that for an exchange to be future ready, they will have to be flexible when it comes to adapting to changes in services. "It is just not within one country people are competing with each other anymore. It is a global competition because the country can throw a new activity. So given that, I feel a future ready exchange is flexible, customer centric and service oriented," he said. End
