NEW DELHI – India and Belgium have agreed to double the bilateral trade over the next five years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Thursday. The countries are "natural partners" given their shared objectives and policies, and they will work closely on various aspects such as energy security, financial regulations, defence cooperation, among others, Modi said after his meeting with Belgium Prime Minister Bart De Wever.
The two countries will work closely under the free trade agreement with the European Union, which includes Belgium, and the agreements signed between the two country leaders Thursday will help turn the opportunities offered by the trade agreement into material success, Modi said in his statement. India and Belgium had total bilateral trade worth $4.72 billion in the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), which included exports worth $2.27 billion.
The two leaders decided to formulate a "fast-track mechanism" for Belgian companies investing in India, a policy in line with the Indian government's thrust on foreign investments. The financial sector, financial technology, and regulatory agencies of India and Belgium will work together to link the financial markets of the two nations, while also boosting economic ties for better investments and coherent regulations, Modi said.
The prime minister also announced that the two countries have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in renewable energy, which is an important component in the larger spectrum of clean energy. Besides, the two countries will cooperate in critical minerals and semiconductors, Modi said, adding that New Delhi was keen on welcoming Brussels' technology.
The two countries will also connect the start-up ecosystems, with India sharing its scale and talent, and Belgium bringing in its technology and experience, Modi said. India and Belgium will also link their maritime sectors, he added. End
