NEW DELHI – India's foreign exchange reserves touched an all-time high level of $729.33 billion as of Aug. 21 due to a sharp rise in capital inflows under the Reserve Bank of India's swap schemes, data released by the central bank Friday showed. The reserves rose by $12.42 billion from a week ago. This was the eighth consecutive week that foreign exchange reserves have risen from the previous week.
The previous high for foreign exchange reserves was $728.49 billion in the week ended Feb. 27.
Foreign currency assets rose $9.48 billion from a week ago to $591.33 billion as of Aug. 21, while the value of the central bank's gold holdings rose by $2.80 billion on week to $114.22 billion.
The central bank's swap schemes announced in June helped boost reserves. RBI's measures have attracted a total of $72.85 billion as of Aug. 21, the central bank said last week. Foreign exchange reserves have risen over $47 billion since the first week of June.
The RBI likely sold dollars in the foreign exchange market in the week ended Aug. 21 to limit the rupee's fall against the dollar. The rupee depreciated 0.3% against the dollar during the week.
Calculated in dollar terms, the RBI's foreign exchange reserves also reflect the impact of the appreciation or depreciation of currencies other than the dollar, such as the euro, the pound sterling, and the yen, held by the central bank. End
