MUMBAI – The mutual fund industry recorded net inflows in July after two consecutive months of outflows, data released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India Tuesday showed. The inflows were led by an INR-1.875-trillion rise in open-ended debt-oriented schemes.

The mutual fund industry recorded net inflows worth INR 2.359 trillion in July, from net outflows worth INR 529.49 billion in June. The industry's total assets under management rose marginally to INR 85.757 trillion as of Jul. 31, from INR 82.225 trillion as of Jun. 30.

Open-ended debt funds saw net inflows of INR 1.875 trillion in July from net outflow of INR 1.091 trillion the previous month. The total assets under management of these schemes rose over 11% on month to INR 19.333 trillion as of Jul. 31 from INR 17.378 trillion as of Jun. 30.

The mutual fund industry's total assets under management rose over 4% on month, mainly on account of positive market sentiment and positive net inflows, Venkat Chalasani, chief executive of the association, said in a conference call. The positive market sentiment was on account of crude prices remaining largely under control, optimism surrounding the US-India trade deal, and expectations of easing of interest rates globally, Chalasani said.

Liquid funds led the inflows registered by open-ended debt funds. Liquid funds recorded net inflows of INR 1.19 trillion in July, against outflows of INR 422.93 billion in June, the data showed. The assets under management of liquid funds surged to INR 6.94 trillion from INR 5.71 trillion in June.

Open-ended equity funds saw positive inflow for the 65th consecutive month, amounting to INR 246.97 billion, Chalasani said. Assets under management of equity funds rose to INR 38.361 trillion as on Jul. 31 from INR 37.34 trillion as on Jun. 30.

While open-ended small-cap funds saw net inflows of INR 77.68 billion in July, mid-cap funds registered net inflows of INR 61.92 billion. Large-cap funds, however, saw net outflows of INR 13.22 billion. Net outflows in large-cap funds could largely be on account of profit booking by some domestic investors, Chalasani said.

The net inflows under money market funds stood at INR 211.80 billion in July, as opposed to net outflows of INR 105.95 billion in June. Assets under management of the category rose to INR 3.26 trillion from INR 3.04 trillion in June.

Net inflows under open-ended flexi cap schemes declined to INR 47.09 billion from INR 52.31 billion in June. Corporate bond funds saw net outflows of INR 7.85 billion, sharply lower than negative flows of INR 75.57 billion in June.

Contributions from systematic investment plans touched an all-time high of INR 319.61 billion in July, up from INR 317.81 billion in June. New systematic investment plan folios rose over three times in July to 6.14 million from 2.03 million in June. In July, 5.03 million systematic investment plan accounts matured or were discontinued, slightly lower than 5.06 million in June.

Inflows under both gold and silver exchange-traded funds fell sharply on month in July. Gold ETF net inflows more than halved on month to INR 15.59 billion in July from INR 34.43 billion in June. Silver exchange-traded funds saw net inflows of INR 12.85 billion in July, sharply down from INR 42.86 billion in June.

While assets under management of gold ETFs rose on month to INR 1.73 trillion, silver ETF assets under management fell on month to INR 776.76 billion. The fall was on account of mark-to-market losses, Chalasani said.

AMFI will watch out for any impact of the possible Merchant Discount Rate on payments made using the Unified Payments Interface in mutual funds, but Chalasani said it was too early for him to comment on this. Parliament on Monday passed a bill that authorises the government to permit banks and other service providers to levy charges on payments through the Unified Payments Interface and other notified electronic payment modes.

The recently-launched closing auction session for stocks was introduced in discussion with the mutual fund industry and AMFI is examining various aspects of it, Chalasani said. "I think for sure it is a successful model across globally. It is a successful model implemented here, but there are certain gaps that are there. I am sure that in consultation with the industry, we could address that."  End
