--RBI: Indian cos raised $6.08 bln via external commercial borrowing in Jun 

 

MUMBAI – Indian companies raised $6.08 billion through external commercial borrowings and foreign currency convertible bonds in June, up 75% from a year ago, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India Wednesday.

 

External commercial borrowings in June were $1.34 billion higher than in May. Of the total, $5.94 billion was under general permission, while $133 million was raised by Air India Ltd. under special permission, the RBI said.

 

Microsoft Corporation (India) Pvt. Ltd. was the biggest borrower, raising $1.44 billion through five-year loans for general corporate purposes. Shriram Finance Ltd. was the second-largest borrower, raising $1.33 billion through two-year loans for refinancing of existing external commercial borrowings. 

 

Other large borrowers were Power Grid Corp. of India Ltd., which raised almost $498 million through a 14-year and two-month loan for onlending. Serentica Renewables India 4 Pvt. Ltd. raised $450 million through five-year loans for refinancing existing overseas borrowings, while Power Finance Corp. Ltd. raised $300 million for five years for general corporate purposes, according to the RBI release.

 

Under the Reserve Bank of India's Jun. 5 measures to boost foreign capital inflows, external commercial borrowings by public-sector undertakings were at $1.52 billion, according to the data released by the central bank Saturday.
