MUMBAI – Tata Investment Corp. Ltd. reported a sharp rise in standalone profit for the quarter ended June, driven by a substantial increase in dividend income from its investment portfolio, even as mark-to-market losses weighed on fair value gains.
The company's standalone profit after tax rose 17.7% on year to INR 1.64 billion in the June quarter from INR 1.39 billion a year earlier. Profit before tax increased to INR 1.97 billion from INR 1.60 billion in the corresponding period last year. Total income climbed 22.3% to INR 2.09 billion from INR 1.71 billion.
The earnings growth was primarily supported by a sharp rise in dividend income, which surged to INR 2.06 billion during the quarter from INR 1.36 billion a year earlier. Interest income also improved to INR 97.4 million from INR 78.7 million.
However, the company reported a net fair value loss of INR 100 million during the quarter compared with a gain of INR 233.6 million a year ago, reflecting adverse mark-to-market movements in its investment portfolio. Despite this, total revenue from operations increased to INR 2.09 billion from INR 1.70 billion, highlighting the strength of dividend receipts during the period.
Tata Investment also disclosed that, apart from the reported profit after tax, it realised gains of INR 690 million from the sale of equity investments during the quarter, which were credited directly to retained earnings. Consequently, the combined realised profit for the quarter stood at INR 2.32 billion.
Tata Investment, classified by the Reserve Bank of India as a middle-layer non-banking financial company, continues to operate as an investment company with no separate reportable business segments. Tuesday, Tata Investment Corp. shares ended at INR 677.60 on the National Stock Exchange, up slightly from Monday. End
