MUMBAI – The depression laying over central India weakened into a well-marked low pressure area over southeast Rajasthan in the early hours of Saturday, the India Meteorological Department said. This weather system is likely to weaken further into a low pressure area in the next 24 hours. As such, the intensity of rainfall over Gujarat is set to reduce significantly from Saturday, the weather department said.
The department has issued a red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall with spells of extremely heavy showers over Gujarat for Saturday. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning. Heavy showers are likely to continue over the state till Sunday, the department said. Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of Konkan and Goa till Monday and over central Maharashtra on Sunday and Monday.
Most parts of west India, particularly Gujarat, have been lashed with extremely heavy rainfall with spells of exceptionally heavy showers, with some districts in the state recording peak levels of precipitation received in 24 hours. The formation of a weather system over the Bay of Bengal, which steadily moved inland westwards, strengthening as it moved closer to Gujarat, had led to intense monsoon rainfall over the state.
A trough runs from southwest Rajasthan to northeast Bihar, while an upper air cyclonic circulation lues over southeast Himachal Pradesh, the weather bureau said. A western disturbance acting as a trough also lies over southeast Himachal Pradesh.
These weather systems are expected to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Rajasthan till Sunday, the weather bureau said. Heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also likely over several parts of northwest India till Friday, the bureau said.
An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Assam. This weather system, along with the trough running from Rajasthan to Bihar, is likely to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Wednesday, the bureau said. Heavy showers with thundershowers are seen over multiple parts of east India till Friday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is seen over Arunchal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till Friday.
In central India, heavy rainfall is likely over parts of east Madhya Pradesh from Tuesday to Friday and over Chhattisgarh from Monday to Friday, the weather department said. Light to moderate showers with thunderstorms and lightning are expected over most parts of central India till Friday.
An offshore trough runs from south Gujarat to north Kerala, which is likely to trigger very heavy rainfall over parts of Karnataka and Kerala on Sunday, the department said. Thunder squalls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected over parts of Karnataka till Sunday. Strong surface winds are seen over parts of Karnataka and Kerala till Sunday and over Andhra Pradesh and Telangana till Wednesday. Heavy showers are likely to persist over many parts of south peninsular India till Friday. End
