NEW DELHI/MUMBAI – Star Health and Allied Insurance Co. Ltd. expects slight moderation in insurance demand once the benefit of goods and services tax exemption subsides. "Post the GST waiver there was a significant jump in the growth rates for the entire industry and for us as well in H2 of last year. So, we do see some moderation in growth rates, which will happen, but I think our strategy of focusing on acquiring business with certain set of objectives in certain markets will continue," Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Anand Roy said in a post-earnings analyst call.

In September last year, the GST Council had exempted individual life and health insurance policies from the indirect tax. In Apr-Jun, the company's gross written premium rose nearly 19% on year to INR 42.87 billion. However, it fell over 28% on a sequential basis. Fresh retail health gross written premium for the quarter was up 37% on year at INR 7.3 billion. Roy projected 15-16% insurance revenue growth throughout the year and in 2027-28 (Apr-Mar) as well.

To support growth, the health insurer will continue to focus more on younger consumers, Roy said. "Senior citizens hardly under 5% now for the overall book. We largely focused on younger consumers." The company will also continue to scale up its industry-leading agency network.

The health insurer has been working on reducing its loss ratio for the past 18 months, according to Roy. "On the loss ratio, the 360 degree approach that we've taken of improving the portfolio, quality, the pricing, and all the initiatives on claims, starting from network management...to the tele-consultation. All of this is contributing to the improvement in the loss ratio, and this is what we want to do on a sustained basis," he said. In the June quarter, the insurer facilitated about 50,000 tele-consultations compared to 9,000 a year ago.

Going ahead, the company will focus on investing in information technology for better risk management, faster customer service, and to bring down costs for customers. "The digital and artificial intelligence investments remain a key strategic initiative for us and we continue to embed digital across the insurance value chain," Roy said.

On Wednesday, Star Health reported 26% on-year growth in its net profit at INR 5.50 billion for the June quarter. Insurance sales for the period rose over 13% on year to INR 49.2 billion. At 1018 IST, shares of Star Health were up 1.3% at INR 606.95 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
