MUMBAI – Benchmark equity indices are expected to be volatile Tuesday on account of expiry of monthly derivatives contracts of Nifty 50 Tuesday. The ease in military tensions between the US and Iran and the subsequent decline in crude oil prices improved market sentiment for the near term. However, it could be fragile as the US may launch attack again, dissolving the improvement in the scenario. Analysts expect the Street to react to the June quarter results, with special focus on Coal India, Hindustan Unilever, and Larsen & Toubro.

"A pause in strikes in West Asia has eased concerns over rising import costs and inflation, triggering a relief rally in markets," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments Ltd., said in a note. "The sharp correction in crude oil prices, along with a decline in long-term bond yields, has also raised hopes of a durable resolution, supported by signs of long unwinding, Nair said.

Investors would also watch out for key monetary policy meetings around the world this week, led by the US Federal Reserve, Bank of England, and Bank of Japan. "On the domestic front, a narrowing rainfall deficit is adding comfort to the inflation outlook, supported by better-than-expected Q1 (Apr-Jun) earnings and a positive business outlook," Nair added.

Monday, the Nifty 50 ended at 23995.95 points, up 228.50 points or 1%. The index went past the psyschologically-crucial 24000 points but ended a shade below the level. The 50-stock index had fallen below 24000 points after US President Donald Trump said he would impose steep tariffs on generic drugs imported by the US starting August 2028 if the companies failed to bring manufacturing to the US by then. The market's fear gauge plunged over 9% to end at 12.660 points. Only six Nifty 50 stocks ended lower, a sharp contrast from Friday, when 33 stocks fell.

On Tuesday, the indices may remain volatile as the futures and options contracts of Nifty 50 expire. "If the Nifty (50) moves and sustains above 24000, we may witness a continuation of the uptrend towards 24250–24300," Rupak De, a senior technical analyst, said in a note. "However, failure to sustain above 24000 might trigger a correction towards 23,800," he added.

Tuesday, L&T is expected to post an underwhelming results for the June quarter due to its significant exposure to the war-hit West Asia. The company is expected to post the lowest year-on-year growth in net profit as well as revenue in six June quarters. L&T is expected to report a consolidated net profit of INR 38.50 billion, up 6.4% on year and down 27% from March quarter, according to the average of estimates from 11 brokerages. The company's consolidated revenue from operations for the quarter is expected to be INR 685.64 billion, up 7.7% on year. From the quarter ago, the metric is seen falling 17% on quarter. The stock ended 0.5% higher at INR 3,806.

Hindustan Unilever is expected to report a year-on-year fall in net profit for the June quarter. If the forecast is met, it would fall after registering growth for six consecutive quarters. This is likely due to a rise in input costs for most of the quarter owing to the war in West Asia. Its revenue from operations is likely to rise for the third straight quarter with slow but steady growth, aided by price hikes. HUL ended at INR 2,174.60, up over 1%.  End
