MUMBAI – Private sector lender YES Bank Ltd. Saturday reported 34% on-year growth in its net profit for the June quarter on the back of its strongest credit growth in over seven years. The lender's growth in total income outpaced the growth in expenses, supporting its net profit. A fall in tax payments also aided the bottom line, but a 39% on-year rise in provisions ate into profits.

The bank's net profit for the reporting quarter was INR 10.71 billion, up from INR 8.01 billion in the year-ago quarter. The bank marginally beat analysts' profit estimate of INR 10.29 billion. The roughly INR-11-billion figure was helped by nearly 18% on-year growth in its net interest income at INR 27.86 billion, slightly more than the Street's estimate of INR 27.57 billion. The bank's advances grew at around the same pace of 18% on year – which is a 30-quarter high – to INR 2.85 trillion. Interest earned saw the highest on-year growth of 6% since Oct-Dec 2024, at INR 80.44 billion. Total income of the bank rose around 5% both on year and sequentially to INR 98.42 billion in the June quarter.

The bank's net profit was flat sequentially. On Friday, shares of YES Bank ended at INR 23.61 on the National Stock Exchange, down 0.6%.

YES Bank's net interest margin for the reporting quarter was steady on quarter at 2.7%, and up 20 basis points on year.

The bank's asset quality was little changed, with a gross non-performing asset ratio of 1.3% and net non-performing asset ratio of 0.2% as of Jun. 30, both unchanged on quarter. However, the bank's provisions grew on year to INR 3.94 billion in the June quarter, after falling for the previous two quarters. The provision coverage ratio was 81.7% as of Jun. 30. Its net credit cost in Apr-Jun was 0.3% of average assets, unchanged from the year-ago quarter. Gross slippages in the reporting quarter were 1.4% of advances at INR 9.64 billion, down from INR 14.58 billion, or 2.4% of advances, in the year-ago quarter. Retail banking slippages were at their lowest in 10 quarters at INR 8.43 billion, the bank said in a press release. Retail advances comprise the largest segment of the bank's loan book. Recoveries and upgrades during quarter were at INR 5.64 billion, it said.

Given the high credit growth, the bank's credit deposit ratio was 90.4% in the reporting quarter, much higher than the Reserve Bank of India's preferred limits of about 70% to 80%, and up from 85.7% in the previous quarter. The bank's deposit growth was 14.3% on year, taking the absolute figure to INR 3.15 trillion in Apr-Jun. The lender's current account savings account deposits grew at the same pace on year to INR 1.03 trillion. Its current account savings account ratio was at a six-quarter low of 32.7%.

The bank's capital buffers reduced slightly, with its Basel0III capital adequacy ratio at 15.1% as of Jun. 30, lower than 15.3% in the previous quarter and 15.8% in the year-ago quarter. However, the bank's average liquidity coverage ratio rose to 138.2% from 119.0% in the March quarter after the RBI's LCR norms kicked in Apr. 1.

The bank reduced its exposure to retail in its loan book slightly, while increasing the share of corporate and institutional banking. Retail loans comprised 45% of its loan book, down from 46% in the March quarter and 49% in the year-ago quarter. The share of corporate and institutional banking rose to 31% from 26% in the year-ago quarter.

The bank's tax expenses fell nearly 13% on year and 34% sequentially to INR 2.39 billion in Apr-Jun, aiding its bottom line. The bank reported a meagre rise in total expenses, up nearly 2% on year at INR 81.38 billion. On quarter, however, expenses rose nearly 5%. The bank's cost of deposits in the reporting quarter stood at 5.4%, lower than 5.5% in the previous quarter. Its cost of funds also eased to 5.7% from 5.8% in the March quarter. The bank's yield on advances moderated to 9.1% from 9.2% in the previous quarter.

"We delivered higher core earnings even as gains from Security Receipts and treasury fell sharply - clear evidence that the underlying franchise is strengthening...Looking ahead, our focus is clear: deepen the core, sustain profitability, and create a resilient franchise that delivers lasting value for every stakeholder," Vinay M. Tonse, managing director and chief executive officer of YES Bank, said in the release.  End
