NEW DELHI – India's wholesale price index rose to at least 27-month high in June on the back of persistently high food and fuel inflation in the wake of the West Asia war, according to the data released by the commerce ministry Tuesday. At 9.87%, WPI inflation in June was the highest in the new series with back data available till April 2024. The new WPI series has 2022-23 (Apr-Mar) as the base year, updated from FY12 in the old series.
The wholesale inflaton of 9.87% in June was above expectations. According to an Informist poll, economists saw WPI inflation rising to 9.3% in June. The May WPI inflation print, as per the new series, was unchanged from the provisional estimate of 9.68%.
This was the second consecutive month when the WPI inflation was highest in the new series. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry last month released inflation data based on the new WPI series and new Producer Price Indices. The new WPI series tracks 957 items, up from 697 items in the FY12 series.
The rise in WPI inflation in June was led by primary articles and fuel and power inflation. Primary articles inflation rose 7% in June from 4.99% in May. Among primary articles, food articles inflation rose 5.49% last month from 3.6% in May, while inflation in non-food articles grew 11.07% in June from 9.49% in May.
"Wholesale prices across most food items have witnessed a hardening in their YoY (year-on-year) inflation prints in early-July 2026 relative to June 2026, suggesting that the WPI-food inflation is likely to inch up somewhat in the ongoing month," Rahul Agrawal, principal economist at ICRA, said in a note.
Fuel and power inflation was 27.41% in June, reflecting the higher crude oil prices and its second order effects. Although, fuel and power inflation in June eased from 30.33% a month ago as the crude oil prices moderated to pre-war levels last month after the US and Iran progressed in securing an interim peace deal. That said, the ceasefire revoke and uncertainity in negotiations have again led to higher crude oil prices. Among the fuel and power segment, crude petroleum and natural gas inflation moderated to 34.75% in June from 61.51% in May.
The newly released output Producer Price Index, which tracks output and input factory gate prices, inched up to 109.9 in June from 109.6 in May. Output Producer Price Index for Apr-Jun rose to 109.4 from 100.3 in the same period a year ago.
The trial Input Producer Price Index for all manufacturing industries grew to 107.1 in June from 104.9 in May. The Input Producer Price Index for manufacturing inflation rose 2.1% on month in June from 0.7% on month in May.
WPI manufactured product inflation remained flat sequentially at 7.48% last month, highest in at least 27 months. WPI core inflation eased to 7.5% in June from 7.6% in May.
The all commodities index of the WPI rose 0.3% on month in June. The WPI food index was up 1.6% on month in June. Last month, WPI primary articles index grew 5.4% on month and WPI manufactured products index was up 7.2% from May.
"While global commodity prices, including oil, have largely cooled on an average in July 2026 so far from the levels seen in June 2026, the escalation in tensions in West Asia has resulted in some rebound in prices in the recent sessions, posing upside risks," Agrawal said.
WPI inflation for Apr-Jun was 9.37%. In the first quarter of 2026-27 (Apr-Jun), primary articles inflation was 5.35%, fuel and power inflation was 27.51%, and manufactured products inflation was 7.18%.
ICRA expects the WPI inflation to ease to 9.0% in July. "Thereafter, trends in global commodity prices and the progress of the Southwest Monsoon would influence the WPI inflation trajectory in the remaining part of the fiscal, with the latter particularly impacting food inflation, which would also see some upward pressure on account of a low base over the next few months," Agrawal said.
