MUMBAI – Rainfall activity is expected to remain subdued over parts of northwest, west, central, and south peninsular India in the next six to seven days, the India Meteorological Department said Monday. The monsoon trough has shifted away from most of the Indian mainland, while no active weather systems are present over these regions, the weather department said.
All active weather systems are currently over eastern or northeastern India. Two upper cyclonic circulations lie over Bangladesh, while a trough runs from northwest Bihar to Manipur. A western disturbance, characterised by cyclonic circulation, lies over Pakistan.
Under the influence of these weather systems, very heavy rainfall is likely over Bihar till Tuesday, over Odisha till Wednesday, over Assam and Meghalaya on Thursday, and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on Friday, the weather department said. Heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over parts of eastern and northeastern India till Sunday, the weather bureau said.
In northwest India, heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and west Uttar Pradesh on Saturday and Sunday, over Uttarakhand from Wednesday to Sunday, and over east Uttar Pradesh from Friday to Sunday, the weather department said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also expected over many parts of northwest India till Sunday, the department said.
The western end of the monsoon trough has shifted north of its normal position and is now running close to the Himalayan foothills, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. The eastern end of the trough has also shifted northward, though it is not exactly aligned with the foothills, the weather agency said.
Currently, there are no indications that the monsoon trough will return to its normal position. Additionally, the north-south trough along the west coast of India, which had triggered heavy rainfall over the Konkan region, has weakened, the private weather agency said. The low-level anticyclonic circulation over the equatorial western Arabian Sea is also unlikely to strengthen the westerly winds along the west coast. Further, no active western disturbance is expected over the northern mountains in the next week, the weather agency said.
As such, heavy rainfall is only expected over Chhattisgarh on Tuesday and Wednesday, the weather department said. In the rest of central India, as well as the south peninsula, light to moderate showers with thundershowers, lightning, and gusty winds are expected till Sunday, the weather bureau said. A wet spell is likely to persist over most parts of western India till Sunday, the department said.
Heatwave conditions are expected over parts of Andhra Pradesh till Wednesday, the weather bureau said. Hot and humid conditions are seen in pockets of Odisha till Tuesday, and over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry till Wednesday, the bureau said. End
