India May gems, jewellery exports dn 2.5% on yr at $2.05 bln; Apr-May dn 6%

MUMBAI – The overall gross gems and jewellery exported by India fell 2.5% on year to $2.05 billion in May, while its imports also declined more than 16% from the previous year to $1.41 billion during the month, according to data from the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council. The country's gross exports of gems and jewellery during the first two months of 2026–27 (Apr-Mar) were $4.27 billion, down more than 6% on year, and imports also fell nearly 13% from the previous year to $3.25 billion, the data showed.
The overall gross exports of cut and polished diamonds in May rose more than 3% on year to $980.73 million, though imports of the same commodity fell nearly 15% on year to $72.24 million, according to the data. In Apr-May, exports of cut and polished diamonds were down over 9% on year at $1.87 billion, while imports during the same period were $294.25 million, up a whopping 101% from the previous year, according to the data.
The country's gross imports of rough diamonds during Apr-May fell more than nearly 35% from last year to $1.46 billion, the data showed. Exports of polished lab-grown diamonds in May were valued at $101.50 million, up 26% from the previous year, and in Apr-May, it was up 2% on year at $194.78 million.
In May, India's gross exports of gold jewellery were down nearly 15% on year at $758.44 million, while in Apr-May, it fell nearly 19% from last year to $1.60 billion. Silver jewellery exports in Apr-May jumped 173% on year to $365.77 million, according to the data. The country's exports of platinum jewellery during Apr-May were up nearly 25% from the previous year at $41.22 million. End
