--Pakistan PM: Expect finalisation of US-Iran peace deal in next 24 hours
NEW DELHI – The US and Iran may finalise a peace deal in the next 24 hours, with the two sides closer to it than ever before, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Saturday on X, formerly Twitter. The two sides had conducted talks towards the deal in Islamabad. Pakistan was preparing for an electronic signing immediately after it has been finalised, with technical level talks expected next week, Sharif said.
The statement comes after Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday said a memorandum of understanding between the warring nations had never been closer. US President Donald Trump called off strikes planned on Iran Thursday citing progress towards the deal. The deal will reportedly open the key Strait of Hormuz to free passage of ships with more talks scheduled over the next 30 days, according to both the US and Iranian media.
The war in West Asia began on Feb. 28 when the US and Israel bombed Tehran and killed its supreme leader. It has since extended to other fronts including Israel's invasion of Lebanon and Iran's retaliatory strikes against US allies across the Persian Gulf. The US and Iran have stuck to a ceasefire since Apr. 7 despite repeated skirmishes and attacks on both sides.
In anticipation of a deal, global oil prices plunged to three-month lows on Friday. Paralelly, India's benchmark Nifty 50 index surged 2% Friday and the rupee gained 0.7% against the dollar. These moves are likely to continue next week if the peace deal is signed on Sunday, as anticipated. End
