India receives 4.2 mm rainfall Friday, 13% below normal, says IMD

MUMBAI – India received 4.2 millimetres of rainfall on Friday, 13% below the normal of 4.9 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. In the Jun. 1-12 monsoon period, the country received 33.4 millimetres rain, a 26% fall from the normal record of 45 millimetres for the period, as per IMD data.

 

Of the four homogenous regions in the country, only one recorded above-normal precipitation, with the other three witnessing below-normal showers, the data showed. In North West India, IMD reported 5.8  millimetres of rain Friday, 176% above the normal 2.1 millimetres. Notably, West Uttar Pradesh received 16.6 millimetres rain, 1,560% above the normal figure of 1 millimetre.

 

The East and North East India region recorded 7.1 millimetres of rain on Friday, 26% below the normal of 9.7 millimetres. Within the region, Gangetic West Bengal witnessed 20.5 millimetres of rain, 231% above the 6.2 millimetres of the normal.

 

Central India recorded 1.9 millimetres of rain Friday, below the normal of 4.5 millimetres. The South Peninsula witnessed 3.5 millimetres of rain, below 6.2 millimetres normal.

 

In the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall on Friday was "large deficient" in 11, "large excess" in eight, "deficient" in six, "excess" in one, and "normal" in six. Four subdivisions did not record any rainfall on Friday, IMD said.  End
