MUMBAI – Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association's Director General Deepak Ballani said electric vehicles and vehicles which run on biofuel should co-exist in India due to aniticipated rise in demand for ethanol in future. "By 2030, we will have at least 50% of the vehicles of the world are flex-fuel vehicles and that will unlock almost 500 crore (5 billion) litre of ethanol utilisation. This will do wonders for the industry," Ballani said at the Sugar – Ethanol and Bioenergy India conference Friday in Mumbai.

The government on Jun. 5 launched E85 fuel, or 85% ethanol-blended petrol, to power flex-fuel vehicles that can run on ethanol–petrol blends ranging from E20 to E100. Ballani said testing for E25 blending is currently in proccess. He also said while the manufacturing price of flex fuel vehicles has been reduced, there is need to rationalise goods and services tax reduce burden on consumers.

Ashwini Srivastava, joint secretary (sugar) in the Department of Food & Public Distribution said, due to E20 blending, crude imports have reduced and the launch of the new flex-fuel vehicle will support energy security further.

In addition, Srivastava said that about 91% sugarcane dues for 2025-26 sugar season have been paid and about 99.5% of cane dues from the last sugar season have been paid. Talking about monthly sugar sales quota, he said the government is trying to balance the demand and supply by enforcing monthly quota, but mills have sold excess stocks and violated the rules. Hence, a lot of mills were not allowed to export in the 2025-26 season.  End
