NEW DELHI – US President Donald Trump Friday slammed Iran for leaking the terms of the interim peace deal with the US and blamed the country for launching drone attacks on Indian ships leaving the Strait of Hormuz Thursday night. He said the attacks were parried by US forces in the region.

"The terms that Iran leaked out to the Fake News have nothing to do with the terms that were agreed to, in writing," Trump posted on social media as reports of the two countries inching closer to a memorandum of understanding to end hostilities emerged.

"What they said, including their weak and pathetic statement on having a deal, bears no relation to the truth," Trump said, calling the Iranians "very dishonourable people to deal with". He said, "With them, there is no such thing as dealing in good faith. Amazing!"

Iran's official news agency Islamic Republic News Agency, better known by its acronym IRNA, reported that as per the draft deal, Washington and Tehran will give 60 days to address and resolve three outstanding issues. "The three issues are the continuation of the peaceful nuclear programme, lifting of sanctions, and a mechanism for compensating (Iran's) losses," IRNA said.

It said Iran "does not offer any commitments" in the memorandum regarding the nuclear issue, and "the other party does not commit to lifting the sanctions". It further said, "If Tehran decides to sign the memorandum, some of its frozen funds will be released immediately, and the rest gradually."

Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, however, asked the media to stop speculating about the contents of the peace document, even as he hinted that a deal was closer than ever. "The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has never been closer. Pending its finalization, the media should refrain from entering speculation about its content," Araghchi wrote on social media. "In line with our responsible and transparent approach, all details will be shared with the public in due course."

In his social media post, Trump said the drone attack Thursday night on Indian ships leaving the Strait of Hormuz--which he said was "totally rebuffed"--is "totally unacceptable". "They (Iran) better get their act together, and fast!" he said, continuing with his blow hot and cold tactics.

Trump's statement blaming Iran for allegedly attacking Indian ships came after India lodged a protest with the US charge d'affaires in New Delhi over the killing of three Indian sailors in US strikes on an oil tanker near Oman Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the US Central Command said in a post on social media that its warships and air assets continue to patrol the waters of the region and enforce the blockade against Iran. "As of today, US forces have redirected 136 commercial vessels and disabled nine ships to ensure compliance," it said.

The Central Command had earlier shared details of attacks on ships with Indian crew on board. The latest attack came Thursday on the oil tanker MT Jalveer, though no loss of life was reported. "US forces disabled an oil tanker (MT Jalveer) in the Gulf of Oman at 11:20 p.m. ET on Jun. 10 (0845 IST, Jun. 11) after the vessel violated the blockade against Iran by attempting to transport Iranian oil," it said. "A US aircraft fired two Hellfire missiles into the ship's engine room after the crew repeatedly failed to comply with directions from US forces."  End
