MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon trough advanced further over parts of east and northeast India on Wednesday, which is expected to trigger widespread weather activity over both regions, the India Meteorological Department said. Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Tuesday and Wednesday, while heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is expected to prevail over multiple parts of east India till Wednesday, the weather department said.
Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50-60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are also likely over parts of Odisha till Saturday and over Bihar till Saturday and on Thursday, the weather bureau said.
In northeast India, very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday and Thursday, and over Assam and Meghalaya until Saturday and on Wednesday and Thursday. Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is also likely over most parts of northeast India till Thursday, the bureau said.
The southwest monsoon advanced further into more parts of West Bengal and Bihar and some parts of Odisha and Jharkhand, the weather bureau said. Currently, the monsoon trough passes through Harnai and Solapur in Maharashtra, Hyderabad and Bhadradri Kothagudem in Telangana, Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, Paradeep and Baripada in Odisha, Dhanbad in Jharkhand, and Muzaffarpur in Bihar, the bureau said.
Conditions are favourable for the monsoon trough to move further over the remaining parts of Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal, some more parts of Maharashtra, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar, and some parts of Chhattisgarh, the bureau said.
Heavy showers are likely to continue over several parts of south India till Sunday, while thundershowers, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over the region till Thursday, the weather department said.
Thundersqualls are expected over parts of Madhya Pradesh till Saturday and thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely to persist over most parts of central India till Tuesday, the department said. In western India, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over parts of Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, and Marathwada till Saturday.
Heightened weather activity is expected to continue over several parts of northwest India till Thursday, the weather department said. Thundersqualls, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over many parts of the region in the next seven days, the department said.
Heatwave conditions are likely over parts of Marathwada, Telangana, and southwest Rajasthan till Saturday, and over Vidarbha till Tuesday, the weather bureau said. Hot and humid conditions are expected over parts of Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra till Saturday. Warm night conditions are also likely in pockets of Vidarbha till Saturday, the bureau said.
