India receives 33% below normal rainfall at 3.1 mm Thursday, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 3.1 millimetres of rainfall on Thursday, 33% below the normal of 4.6 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. From Jun. 1-11, the country received 29.1 millimetres, which is 27% below the normal of 40.1 millimetres for the period.
Of the four homogenous regions in the country, only one recorded above-normal precipitation, and the other three saw below-normal showers, the data showed. In south peninsula India, rainfall was 1% above normal at 5.4 millimetres. Only the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and parts of Andhra Pradesh recorded substantial rainfall on Thursday, while the other eight subdivisions in the region recorded below-normal rainfall.
Rainfall in central India was 74% below normal at 1.1 millimetres, and in east and northeast India, it was 24% below normal at 7.2 millimetres, according to the data. In northwest India, rainfall was 18% below normal at 1.7 millimetres.
In the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 12, "deficient" in nine, "large excess" in six, "excess" in three, and "normal" in one. Five subdivisions did not record any rainfall on Thursday, the data showed. End
