NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked state governments to develop district-level GDP estimates, NITI Aayog Member K.V. Raju said on Thursday, after the 11th governing council meeting of the government policy think tank here. He said the district-level data would come in a few months.

The availability of reliable and comparable district domestic product estimates is expected to support decentralised planning, evidence-based policy formulation, regional development analysis, and informed decision-making at the district level. Currently, 26 states and Union territories compile district domestic product estimates.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has already released the guidelines for compilation of district domestic product estimates with 2022-23 (Apr-Mar) as the base year.

NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Ashok Lahiri said the council had held detailed discussions on energy, and energy transition, especially in the context of the West Asia war. In this regard, ideas of making solar energy more widespread and affordable, and promoting the use of bio-waste for energy production were mooted. Raju added that the country was seeing fast progress in solar energy storage capacity. Nuclear energy was also discussed.

Lahiri said that the prime minister and state chief ministers agreed on the need to boost manufacturing, especially defence manufacturing, which is as an emerging sector. The prime minister encouraged states to formulate policies to leverage the opportunities arising from its growth. He also urged states to focus on 'One District One Product' initiative and develop export-oriented strategies around it.

NITI Aayog Member Rajiv Gauba said the prime minister also discussed infrastructure issues with states, along with ways to improve urban governance. He emphasised the importance of quick grievance redressal as a component of ease of doing business.

The meeting was attended by chief ministers of 28 states, and the lieutenant governors and administrators of five Union territories. This was the first time that all chief ministers attended the governing council meeting.

Gauba said the council discussed issues related to healthcare, skill development, and education. He added that issues arising out of the West Asia crisis were also discussed, but states did not seek any extra aid on this account. All states, he said, reaffirmed their commitment to the goal of a developed economy and to prepare a detailed actionable plan for this.

Twenty states have already developed Viksit Bharat vision documents, and 10 more will soon submit the document, Raju said. The prime minister emphasised the need for a monitoring framework and targeted 100-day, and five-year goals towards achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.  End
