MUMBAI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs of the country was at 51.917 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, accounting for 28.28% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level was down 8.2% from a year ago and 15.8% above the average storage over the past 10 years, the data showed.
In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 6.67 billion cubic metres, which is 33.6% of the total live storage capacity. A year ago, the water level was over 28.7% of the capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.
In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 4.74 billion cubic metres, accounting for over 21.8% of storage capacity, compared with 24.6% a year ago. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.
The water level in the western region was 11.86 billion cubic metres, accounting for over 31.1% of the storage capacity, compared with 30.1% a year ago. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.
In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 17.05 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, accounting for 35.1% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 30.3% a year ago.
The water level in the southern region was 11.60 billion cubic metres, 20.98% of the storage capacity, compared with 34.9% a year ago.
India received 2.4 millimetres of rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, 42% below the normal of 4.2 millimetres for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department. End
