NEW DELHI – US President Donald Trump Thursday warned that US forces would be hitting Iran "very hard" in the night and, in the near future, assuming "total control" of Iran's oil and gas markets, just as Washington had done in Venezuela.

"The United States will be hitting Iran (Whose Navy, Air Force, Radar, Anti Aircraft, and all other forms of Defense, together with most of its offensive capability, are GONE!), VERY HARD TONIGHT," Trump posted on social media.

"At some point in the not too distant future, we will be taking Kharg Island, and other oil infrastructure points, and assume total control of their Oil and Gas Markets, much like we have with Venezuela," he added. Trump claimed the arrangement in Venezuela was "working out brilliantly" for both Caracas and Washington, DC.

The US and Iran exchanged strikes for the second day Thursday, with the US military targeting two water reservoirs in Iran besides surveillance and radar sites in the south of the country. Iran responded with strikes on US military assets in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan.

The latest escalation prompted Iran's foreign ministry to say the US attacks had rendered the Apr. 8 ceasefire "practically meaningless". Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had warned Wednesday that no attack on his country would go unanswered.  End
