--Indian embassy in Oman: Indian-crew merchant ship struck near Hormuz

NEW DELHI – An Indian oil tanker identified as MT Jalveer came under attack Thursday in the restive Gulf of Oman region, making it the third India-linked commercial vessel to be attacked within a week in that region. Some Indian sailors are said to be on board the ship.

The Indian embassy in Muscat confirmed the incident. "We have learnt of an incident involving a vessel off Shinas port of Oman, earlier today," the embassy posted on X. "We are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the local authorities for further details."

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency said it received a report of an incident 21 nautical miles northeast of Sohar near Oman around 1130 IST. It cited local authorities as saying that the strike resulted in a fire in the engine room.

The incident came within hours of the Indian government confirming the death of three Indian crew members of the vessel MT Settebello, which was struck by US forces on Wednesday in the same region. "US Central Command disabled the Palau-flagged MT Settebello as it transited the Gulf of Oman. A US aircraft fired precision munitions into the ship's engine room," the US military said in a statement.

On Monday, US forces had fired on the engine room of oil tanker Marivex, causing a fire on the vessel. All 24 Indian crew members were safely rescued by the Oman Navy in this case. The US Central Command said it disabled the tanker for violating its blockade and attempting to sail to an Iranian port.  End
