--Shipping minister: Three Indian sailors on ship hit by US near Oman dead
NEW DELHI – The three Indian crew members who went missing after their vessel was hit by a US missile on Wednesday are confirmed to be dead, Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said Thursday.
"Sadly, three Indian seafarers initially reported missing are now confirmed dead after bodies have been located and identified," Sonowal shared on social media platform X.
"I have directed officials to ensure immediate repatriation of the rescued crew members and swift return of the mortal remains of the deceased for their final rites," he added.
The Palau-flagged oil tanker MT Settebello, with 24 India crew members, was hit by a missile 20 nautical miles northeast of Sohar in Oman, near the Strait of Hormuz around 1500 IST on Wednesday. The Oman Navy rescued 21 Indian sailors, while three could not be traced.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs Wednesday summoned the US' charge d'affaires in New Delhi Jason Meeks to protest the attack on the commercial vessel. Media reports have identified the deceased as deck cadet Aditya Sharma, engine fitter Shivanand Chaurasiya, and Chief Engineer Patnala Suresh.
In a formal statement, the ministry condemned the attack and said the "continuing incidents of attacks on shipping in the region are deeply worrisome". End
