MUMBAI – Banks' loans rose 17.65% on year to INR 215.16 trillion while deposits were up 12.2% on year at INR 260.02 trillion as of May 31, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India Thursday. The credit-to-deposit ratio expanded to 82.74% from 82.48?ortnight ago as outstanding loans rose more than deposits during the period.

 

Outstanding advances were up INR 3.29 trillion from a fortnight ago and deposits were up INR 3.13 trillion as of May 31.

 

Investments by banks grew 4.89% on year to INR 70.34 trillion as on May 31 and were up INR 697.19 billion from the previous reporting fortnight. Investments were up 4.2% on year as of May 15.

 

In December, the government changed the definition of a reporting fortnight under the banking laws. Under the amended regulation, the definition of "fortnight" has been changed from a Saturday-to-Friday cycle to a clearly defined two-part monthly period--either the 1st to the 15th of each month or the 16th to the last day of the month, both days inclusive.
