MUMBAI – India received 2.4 millimetres rainfall on Wednesday, 42% below the normal of 4.2 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. From Jun. 1-10, rainfall in the country was 26% below normal at 26.1 millimetres.

All four homogenous regions in the country received below normal precipitation on Wednesday, the data showed. Rainfall in south peninsula India was 9% below normal at 4.1 millimetres. In east and northeast India, rainfall was 29% below normal at 6.9 millimetres. Northwest India recorded 0.7 millimetres of showers, which is 60% below normal, while central India received 1 millimetre of rainfall, 73% below normal for the period.

Currently, the monsoon trough has travelled in a parallel course along the western coastline and remains weak over the interior of South Peninsula India. The weather activity recorded so far over South India is more characteristic of pre-monsoon bursts, which occur before the onset of the monsoon, the weather agency said. Rainfall over the region has remained largely normal so far in June, the agency said.

In the 36 sub-divisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 15, "deficient" in 10, "large excess" in four, "excess" in three, and "normal" in three. One sub-division did not record any rainfall on Wednesday, according to the data.  End
