NEW DELHI – Three Indian crew members on an oil tanker went missing while 21 other Indian mariners were rescued following a missile strike on their vessel off the coast of Oman on Wednesday, India's Ministry of External Affairs said.
"We condemn the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman earlier today," the ministry said in a statement. "Our embassy in Oman is closely monitoring the situation and proactively coordinating with the Omani authorities in the ongoing search and rescue operation."
Seatrade Maritime News cited security firm Vanguard Tech saying that Settebello transmitted a distress call around 0930 UTC (1500 IST) that it had been struck by a missile resulting in a fire on the vessel.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations shared a warning that it had received a report of an incident 20 nautical miles northeast of Sohar in Oman, near the Strait of Hormuz. "Local authorities have reported a tanker has experienced a fire in their engine room and are on the scene assisting with the evacuation of the crew. The vessel is reporting 1 casualty and 2 crew members missing," the UK Maritime Trade Operations said, citing local authorities.
India's external affairs ministry said the "continuing incidents of attacks on shipping in the region are deeply worrisome".
On Jun. 8, US forces fired on the engine room of oil products tanker Marivex, leading to a fire on the vessel. The US Central Command said it disabled the tanker for violating its blockade and attempting to sail to an Iranian port. End
