NEW DELHI – The past 12 years of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance's rule is a story of unprecedented development and political stability, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Wednesday. He emphasised that the pace of development and decisions in "national interest" will only increase in the following years.

"After 2014, projects that used to take decades began getting completed in months," Modi said in his address to an NDA conclave on completion of 12 years of his government. "People of India saw for the first time that if a government works with the right intentions, development happens fast."

He claimed that the NDA government pulled millions out of poverty in the past 12 years and turned them into "neo middle class". "We created ease of living, improved quality of life, and new opportunities for the middle class," the prime minister said, while accusing the Indian National Congress-led governments of burdening the middle class with outdated tax laws and tedious rules. He said the reform in the goods and services tax also benefited the middle class.

Modi underlined the rise in digital payments, solar energy, and green energy capacity, 20% ethanol blending with petrol, expanding metro train networks, and manifold increase in defence exports as some of the achievements of his government.

He added that his government also took some decisions in the national interest which earlier governments were "scared to touch", such as the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution, restoring peace in the Northeast, uprooting Naxalism, military strikes on terrorist bases, outlawing triple talaaq, the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, and One Rank One Pension.

"Earlier governments made the country feel helpless and poor. When the NDA government came to power in 2014, it rekindled a new hope among the people. India started running with full capacity," the prime minister said. "From the 'fragile five', today India is the fastest growing economy in the world."

Earlier in the day, the BJP claimed that Modi had completed the longest tenure in elected office, ahead of the late prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. Party leaders and chief ministers congratulated him on achieving the feat.

Speaking at the conclave, Modi said his government achieved all these milestones "in the midst of global uncertainties". "People of India realised the importance of having a stable government at the Centre," he said. Modi also claimed that the "entire world" is looking towards India for solutions, and the country is required to work "with a global perspective".  End
