NEW DELHI – The external affairs ministry Tuesday slammed Pakistan for alleged police brutality to curb protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in which at least 11 people have reportedly been killed and several others injured. "There are reports of severe police brutality in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in which several people have been killed and many injured," ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in response to a media query.

"We continue to see in this context a pattern of fake news and videos emanating from Pakistan," Jaiswal said. "It is a desperate attempt by Pakistan to cover up its own failings and deflect attention away from its human rights abuses." He said the international community should hold Pakistan accountable "for its misdeeds and abuses".

Clashes broke out in the city of Rawalakot Sunday after tensions flared over the death of a trader, who was allegedly shot during a confrontation with police Friday night. The latest protests were triggered by a decision to reserve 12 seats in the 45-member Legislative Assembly for Kashmiri refugees living elsewhere in Pakistan.

The people of the region have been protesting for the past two years against inflation, electricity shortage, unemployment, and political marginalisation of the region.  End
