MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon has advanced rapidly along the western coast of India over the past few days, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. The monsoon trough is likely to move further northwards over Maharashtra, covering Ratnagiri and reaching the outskirts of Raigad in the next 48 hours, the weather agency said. However, due to unfavourable conditions, the arrival of monsoon over Mumbai is likely to overshoot the normal date of Jun. 11, the agency said.

Pre-monsoon showers over Mumbai have remained far and few, the weather agency said. In the first week of June, most pockets of the city remained dry. The Colaba and Santacruz weather stations in Mumbai recorded 2 millimetres and 13 millimetres of rainfall, respectively, in the month so far. Patchy rainfall is likely to continue over the city till the weekend, the weather agency said.

Currently, a cyclonic circulation lies over the eastcentral Arabian Sea, off the Konkan coast. Weather activity in association with this weather system is likely to remain confined to Goa and south Konkan. The northern parts of Konkan, particularly from Mumbai to Alibag, will lie on the outer peripherals of this weather system, and will observe only scanty rainfall till Friday, the weather agency said. The southern parts of Konkan, including Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, will witness moderate to heavy showers during this period. The intensity and frequency of showers over Mumbai are only likely to increase between Jun. 14 and Jun. 16, the agency said.

Last year, the monsoon hit Mumbai on May 26, the earliest ever recorded. In 2023, monsoon onset over the city was delayed by nearly two weeks to Jun. 25. Typically, monsoon arrives over Mumbai on Jun. 11, with an error margin of plus or minus five days, and this year, it is likely to arrive during the second half of the error margin, the weather agency said.  End
